For me, winter weddings strike this rare balance of romance and intimacy, the season itself creates the atmosphere before you even add decor.
If you’re planning a wedding during the colder months, you get to your pick of style and design ideas in ways other seasons don’t allow. Want your wedding to look like it belongs in a snow globe? You can do exactly that!
Here’s all the inspiration you need to design a winter wedding aesthetic that embraces the charm of the season and makes your day a fairytale come to life.
Winter’s Signature Mood Board
These are some words that come to mind when I think of winter. Serene. Moody. Romantic.
Your winter wedding aesthetic should revolve around the words that come to your mind. Then that becomes atmosphere the atmosphere that you create for your wedding.
Where summer weddings tend to be to airy and light, winter provides depth with its materials. You can pick from velvets, faux furs, heavier linens, and lush florals.
Candlelight becomes a design element. Twinkle lights transform venues into starry spaces. And the colors are typically deeper and richer, depending on the look you’re going for.
For me, the beauty of a winter wedding lies in the intimacy. And that means staying warm all throughout the day. Guests will naturally want to gather close together, hang out by fireplaces, and sip warm drinks (at least I do).
Winter Colors
The colors you go with set the stage for the entire event, and winter gives you room to be bold or subtle depending on your style.
Classic Winter Hues
Icy whites, silvers, and pale blues create a snow-kissed ambiance. They’re ideal if you’re wanting a frosted aesthetic, kind of like turning your wedding into a winter wonderland.
For Romance
Blush, champagne, and warm neutrals bring softness to the season. Adding in light pinks or creams with some metallics creates a dream-like aura.
Gemstone Shades
Deep emerald, navy, burgundy, or even black with gold accents invite drama. These are great choices for grand ballrooms or historic estates.
The Metallic Touch
Gold, copper, and rose gold add warmth, while silver and chrome lean into the icy vibe. Even just a hint, in your flatware, candleholders, or bridesmaid dresses, can tie the palette together.
My tip for you is balance. If you’re going for a strong statement, then balance out bold colors with some neutrals. If you want the frosted look, soften it up with candlelight and natural greenery so it’s not overly stark.
Venue Inspiration for a Winter Atmosphere
The venue is where your winter aesthetic takes shape. You don’t need snow falling outside the window (though it’s awesome if you get it). What you need is a space that lets you bring in the right lighting, decor, and accents.
Indoor Venues
Historic estates, ballrooms, or grand halls lend themselves beautifully to a winter aesthetic. I mean, how incredible will your photos be with fireplaces, high ceilings, and the right lighting?
Rustic Options
Barns, ski lodges, or chalets will work if you want rustic-chic styling. Exposed beams, string lights, and blankets let your guests know they’re part of something special.
Outdoor Settings
If you’re brave enough for an outdoor ceremony (be sure to stay up to date with the weather!!) winter gives you a stunning backdrop. I recommend having clear tents with heaters, lots of draped fabrics, and faux-fur blankets.
Lighting for Practicality and Ambiance
Lighting is everything in a winter wedding. Since days are shorter, the right lighting turns your event from dark and cold to radiant and welcoming.
Candlelight
Nothing compares to candles for romance. Tall, short, scented, or plain candles, you really can’t go wrong. Line the aisle with lanterns, scatter them on reception tables, or group them in clusters of varying heights.
Fairy Lights and String Lights
These add a whimsical element. String them across ceilings, wrap them around beams, or drape them behind your head table for a sparkling backdrop.
Chandeliers
Add elegance with chandeliers, either crystal for a regal look or rustic wood and iron. Drape them with greenery or icicle-like crystals to really wow your guests.
Uplighting
Use subtle uplighting in warm tones (amber, blush, or champagne) to mimic the look of candlelight. It enhances the architectural details of your venue.
I always think of lighting as the invisible decor. Guests may not point to it specifically, but they’ll remember how great they felt while they were there (and not thinking about how cold it is outside).
Fashion and Style
What I love about winter weddings is that they give you so much freedom with fashion. Winter weddings let you go a little more dramatic, after all it’s the season for statement pieces! So go all out.
For Brides
Long sleeves, high necklines, lace overlays, velvet belts or faux-fur wraps all fit the season perfectly. I also love capes, they’re regal and fairytale-like.
For Grooms
Velvet tuxedo jackets, wool suits in navy or deep green, or even classic black tie all work. Winter lets you fold in all the rich fabrics that are way too heavy in summer.
For Bridesmaids
Shades like wine, sapphire, or emerald in rich velvet fabrics will photograph beautifully.
Accessories
Crystal headpieces, tiaras, or pearl jewelry fit nicely into the winter aesthetic. Even gloves or shawls can double as both practical and stylish.
Floral and Decor Accents
Given that the leaves have all fallen this time of year, the decor you choose needs to have warmth and depth. This is your opportunity to incorporate beautiful florals, materials, and details to create the atmosphere you have in your mind.
Florals
Amaryllis, anemones, ranunculus, roses, and orchids all thrive in winter aesthetics. Combine them with lots of greenery, pine, eucalyptus, or holly branches.
Winter Accents
Some popular accents are pinecones, berries, frosted branches, feathers, snow-dusted centerpieces, or arrangements with crystals.
Tablescapes
Go grand for your tables! Your guests will be taking lots of photos while they’re seated. Use crystal glassware, metallic chargers, and add in lots of candlelight with florals.
Ceremony Atmosphere
How do you want your ceremony to look? After all, your ceremony is the heart of the wedding day.
Aisle Styling
Opt for lanterns, garlands, or candles lining the aisle.
Backdrops
Snow-inspired arches, floral structures with frosted branches, or simple curtains of fairy lights.
Music
Don’t forget the music! String quartets, harpists, or acoustic sets create a serene ambiance. Even having carolers can add charm if that fits your style.
Winter Wonderland Reception
The reception is where you get to play with comfort and luxury. You’ll want to make sure your guests are comfortable yet also give them a sense of wonder.
Food and Drinks
Hot chocolate bars, mulled wine, spiced cocktails, and hearty winter dishes add both practicality and charm. Mini pies, cinnamon rolls, or s’mores stations can be fun additions. Yummy!
Entertainment
Live bands, jazz trios, or even ice sculpting demonstrations can tie into the winter atmosphere. Fireworks or sparklers against a snowy backdrop are always memorable.
Decor and Atmosphere
Set up comfy lounge areas with lots of chairs, blankets, and pillows. A dance floor under lights or beneath a starry projection will bring your reception over the top.
Photography and Guest Experience
Winter weddings photograph beautifully, especially if you plan ahead. When guests know they’re cared for, they’re able to fully enjoy the atmosphere you’ve worked so hard to create.
Photography Tips
Capture snow-covered landscapes, candlelit interiors, and frosted florals. Get props like sparklers and sleighs. And if there isn’t any snow, add in faux snow ahead of time.
Guest Experience
Offer warm drinks on arrival, provide blankets for outdoor time, and keep the warm with heaters if needed. Favors like candles, spiced cookies, or custom mugs are great for winter.
