I’ve always thought there’s something fairytale come-to-life about winter weddings. Sipping champagne next to an outdoor pit? And then the possibility of snow as a backdrop to all the photos. Talk about romance!
You just don’t get that experience with a summer wedding.
When you’re looking to plan a winter wedding that your guests will talk about for years and years to come (hopefully for good reasons of course), then that requires planning, planning, and more planning. You don’t want to be remembered for having the wedding where the guests all got sick from the cold, right?
If you’re a bride considering a winter wedding, I’ve compiled a list of things you’ll want to keep in mind. All the way from the early planning stages, down to the finishing touches that will make your big day extraordinary.
Why Winter Weddings Stand Out
Naturally there are plenty of summer and fall weddings. Guests are used to outdoor vineyards or sunny garden ceremonies. Just search anywhere online for “wedding photos” and you’ll see what I mean.
And there’s a gut reaction I think most guests have to a winter wedding. Oh no, I’m going to be sooo cold!
But when you bring people into a ballroom glowing with candlelight in January or a chalet filled with champagne and winter florals, you’re giving them an experience they’re not expecting at all. They won’t want to leave!
Winter weddings are also a chance to be over-the-top dramatic with themes, colors, and wintery charm. You can use a wide range of colors, materials, designs, and grand floral arrangements. And of course, if snow is falling outside, your photographs become instantly iconic.
Design Your Winter Aesthetic
When it comes to winter weddings, it’s a good idea to think of the overall look you’re going for. Winter wonderland? Snow festival? Rustic winter cabin? Your lighting, materials and choice of florals all come together to create your aesthetic.
Colors
Emeralds, rubies, and sapphires create a regal and dramatic look. Metallics like gold, silver, and copper give a festive shine. If you prefer a softer aesthetic, go for whites, creams, and icy blues.
Lighting
Lighting is everything in winter weddings. With the sun setting much earlier, you can use candles, chandeliers, and fairy lights. Candles at different heights give a hint of romance.
Textures
Velvet linens, silk ribbons, faux furs, and metallic chargers all bring that winter essence to the table. Even an add-on, like velvet napkin ties, can change your entire tablescape.
Florals
Winter flowers are spectacular when paired with greenery, berries, or branches. Amaryllis, roses, orchids, and ranunculus are stunning in winter arrangements. White blooms with deep greenery against candlelight will make your photos look fabulous.
Picking the Right Location
Once you have an idea of your aesthetic, you’ll be better able to narrow down where to host your winter wedding. Since weather is unpredictable, you might want to choose a venue that’s just as amazing indoors as it is outdoors.
Historic Estates and Hotels
These often come with gorgeous architecture, fireplaces, and grand ballrooms that already look like winter wonderlands.
Mountain Lodges or Chalets
Perfect if you love the look of snowy backdrops with warm interiors.
Luxury Barns or Converted Warehouses
These can be styled with dramatic lighting and upscale decor, creating a chic winter essence.
Personally, I’m a fan of venues with fireplaces. There’s nothing more inviting for guests than walking into a warm room with a crackling fire on a cold evening. It sets the mood right away. And what a perfect excuse for a fancy s’more station (yes, please).
Your Winter Bridal Style
Of all the four seasons, winter wedding fashion is some of the most striking. You have full permission to go for extra drama. You have access to a wide selection of choices!
Winter wedding gowns shine with long lace or crepe sleeves, high necklines, or really long trains. Fabrics like mikado, satin, and velvet are perfectly at home in cooler weather.
Accessories can take the look even further, with capes, embellished jackets, or feathered boleros offering both style and practicality.
Food and Drink for a Winter Extravaganza
Guests will remember food, and in the winter you can opt for ultra rich menu selections. Here are some yummy ideas.
Since cocktail hour at a winter wedding is the perfect place to set the tone, go for a champagne tower for that added glam. If you want a seasonal signature drink, you could have spiced cocktails or mulled wine.
Dinner is where your flavors will truly shine. Filet mignon, roasted root vegetables, and seasonal soups or bisques are ideal for this time of year. For dessert, a wedding cake infused with winter flavors like white chocolate, hazelnut, or spiced pear becomes a true showstopper.
I love pairing the cake with additional dessert bars filled with artisanal chocolates, petite fours, or even a macaron display. What a memorable and indulgent way to finish off the evening. Just be sure to send me an invite!
Entertainment & Atmosphere
Winter weddings are perfect for dramatic entertainment moments.
Live Music: A string quartet during dinner or a band for cocktail hour is always a solid option.
Surprises: If you have a grand venue, you could have aerialists performing inside as a way to wow your guests.
Guest Comfort: Don’t forget that it’s going to be cold! I’d recommend having ample heaters for any outdoor spaces, with backups in tow. Guests will appreciate the thoughtfulness.
Tips for Winter Wedding Photography
Photography in the winter takes planning, but the results are stunning.
In winter, the light fades faster, so you’ll want to schedule your portraits earlier in the day. That soft winter glow is unmatched.
And if you’re lucky enough to have snow, it becomes a natural backdrop. Just be sure to have warm coats, boots, and blankets handy for outdoor shots and transition time.
I think it’s worth discussing with your photographer how the season’s light and tones will play into your final images.
Practical Prep for a Winter Wedding
Unlike weddings held at other times of the year, winter weddings require a few extra steps to keep everything running smoothly.
Weather Plans
Planning makes for perfection! Always have a clear plan for snow or icy roads, especially if you and your guests are traveling. It’s helpful to work with venues that have built-in accommodations for winter weather. They’ll be able to give you recommendations based on their expertise.
Wardrobe Prep
We’ve covered this before, but be sure to pack winter clothes (e.g., coats, gloves, or boots), and then some. Even if you don’t wear them during the ceremony, they’re worth having ready.
Timing
Because the days are shorter, I suggest building your entire day’s timeline around earlier photos and making the most of natural light.
