Ok, confession time. I can't picture lime green at a winter wedding. Every time I see it, I think of key lime pie, and key lime pie belongs on a summer patio with a tall glass of iced tea. (Yes, I've given this way too much thought.)
Winter colors are a different story. Candlelight, velvet and evergreens do much of the styling for you, so the right colors look beautiful the second guests walk in.
Below are 8 winter wedding color palettes. Each one comes with hex codes you can hand straight to your florist, stationer and planner, plus two ways to use it on your wedding day.
Grab a cup of coffee and let's find your colors!
1. Burgundy & Champagne: Candlelit Romance
Burgundy #800020 | Champagne #F7E7CE | Gold #C5961B
If you can't decide on winter colors, start here. Burgundy is deep and elegant, champagne lightens it, and gold makes everything shimmer once the candles are lit.
These colors are made for a ballroom, a historic hotel or a stone chapel.
How to style
For your bouquet, ask your florist for burgundy garden roses, champagne spray roses and a few dark scabiosa, wrapped in champagne silk ribbon. A sprig of gold-dipped eucalyptus adds a little shimmer.
For your tablescape, start with champagne linens, then add gold chargers and burgundy napkins tied with velvet ribbon. Then cluster tall candlesticks down the center of long tables. So dreamy!
2. Emerald & Ivory: Old World Glamour
Emerald #046307 | Ivory #FFFFF0 | Antique Gold #CFB53B
Emerald is jewel-box gorgeous in winter. Team it up with ivory and antique gold, and your reception looks like a candlelit library in a grand European hotel.
Yes, please!
How to style
For your bridesmaids, choose emerald velvet or satin gowns in mix-and-match necklines. Hand them all-ivory bouquets of ranunculus and spray roses so the green gets all the attention.
For your invitations, go with ivory cardstock, emerald ink and an antique gold wax seal. Ask your stationer for a deckled edge for an heirloom look.
3. Navy & Blush: Midnight Garden
Navy #1F2A44 | Silver #C0C0C0 | Blush #F4C2C2
Navy looks like a winter night sky, and blush keeps it sweet and soft. Silver brings in the sparkle of frost.
It's perfect for the bride who loves deep winter colors with a soft, pretty side.
How to style
For your ceremony, line the aisle with silver lanterns and blush rose petals. Ask your florist for an arch of blush roses, white hydrangea and silver dollar eucalyptus against navy draping.
For your cake, ask your baker for a navy buttercream tier between two ivory tiers, finished with blush sugar flowers and a touch of silver leaf. Now I want cake!
Oh, and by the way! Picking colors gets so much easier once you can picture the whole day. Day 4 of my free 30-Day Dream Wedding Life Playbook walks you through making a vision board for your wedding AND your life together.
4. Icy Blue & Silver: Winter Wonderland
Icy Blue #CFE3EF | Silver #C0C0C0 | Snow White #FFFAFA
Dreaming of a snow globe wedding? This is your color combo. Icy blue, silver and snow white look crisp and bright, especially at a venue with big windows or a snowy view.
How to style
For your reception, hang crystal garlands and silver star lights above the dance floor, and ask your venue about soft blue uplighting. Fill centerpieces with white amaryllis, white tulips and frosted pine.
For your guest arrival, ask your caterer to set up a hot cocoa bar with snow white mugs, icy blue napkins and silver spoons. Guests warm up the minute they walk in.
5. Black & Gold: Black Tie Glamour
Black #0B0B0B | Ivory #FFFFF0 | Gold #C5961B
Black and gold is pure New Year's Eve energy, and ivory keeps it bridal. Think black tie dress code, gold candlelight and a champagne tower.
Swoon! If a December 31 date is calling your name, my New Year's Eve wedding ideas go perfectly with these shades.
How to style
For your stationery, choose black cardstock with gold foil lettering and ivory envelope liners. Add "black tie" to the dress code line so guests bring their best.
For your tables, use black linens with gold flatware, ivory candlesticks and low arrangements of ivory roses and white phalaenopsis orchids.
6. Plum & Mauve: Velvet Evening
Plum #5E2750 | Mauve #B784A7 | Cream #FFF8E7
Plum is moody and intimate, mauve takes the edge off, and cream keeps the whole look bright in photos.
This trio looks so pretty with velvet, so lean into it!
How to style
For your florals, ask for plum calla lilies, mauve garden roses, dusty miller and cream ranunculus. Let your florist suggest seasonal swaps if a bloom is hard to find in winter.
For your lounge area, set up plum velvet sofas with cream throws and mauve pillows near the fireplace. It quickly becomes the spot everyone heads to after dinner.
7. Forest Green & Cranberry: Christmas Classic
Forest Green #2C5F2D | Cranberry #9B1B30 | Gold #C5961B
Saying "I do" close to the holidays? Forest green and cranberry say Christmas in the prettiest way, and gold keeps it polished.
Match these colors with my Christmas wedding planning guide and you're well on your way.
How to style
For your centerpieces, ask your florist for cedar, cranberry roses, red ilex berries and gold candelabras on a forest green velvet runner.
For your favors, give guests a small box of chocolate truffles wrapped in cranberry paper with a gold ribbon. Chocolate is always the right answer.
8. Mocha & Champagne: Winter Neutrals
Mocha #6F4E37 | Champagne #F7E7CE | Pearl #EAE0C8
Love a soft, neutral look? Mocha, champagne and pearl are warm and calm, like a latte by the fire.
This color story looks beautiful in a mountain lodge, a winery or a candlelit barn.
How to style
For your cake, ask your baker for a pearl buttercream cake with mocha and champagne sugar roses, and a chocolate tier inside. If simple is your style, here's the case for a simple wedding cake.
For your linens, dress the tables in champagne tablecloths, then top them with mocha velvet runners, pearl chargers and gold-rimmed glassware.
How to Pick Your Winter Wedding Colors
Start with your venue
Look at the walls, floors and lighting first. An evening reception by candlelight makes deep jewel tones shine, while a bright venue with big windows is made for icy blues and whites.
Pick one deep shade, one metallic and one light shade
Every color combo above follows this formula. The deep shade sets the mood, the metallic adds sparkle, and the light shade keeps your photos bright.
Send your hex codes to every vendor
Save your favorite swatch and send it to your florist, stationer, baker and planner so everyone works from the same colors. Flowers vary, so ask your florist which winter blooms come closest.
Ask your photographer about dark colors
Very dark color schemes photograph best with light accents nearby. Ask your photographer how burgundy, navy or black looks in their style, and plan ivory or cream close to your darkest shade.
