So you're getting married on Valentine's Day, lucky you! How romantic to say “I do” on a day that's already all about love.
But I don’t think that means you have to go full red-and-pink overload to make it special. You can absolutely make it stunning and sophisticated without paper hearts and candy.
What do you have in mind? Elegant? Modern? Whimsical? Not sure?
No worries, I’ve got you covered. Here are some of my favorite Valentine's Day wedding ideas to inspire your big day.
Let There Be (Romantic) Light
I can't say this enough…lighting is everything!
This is one of those elements that really overhauls a space, so you'll definitely want to give it the attention it deserves. The right lighting makes everything look softer, warmer, and so much more romantic. And for a Valentine's Day wedding, it's an absolute must.
Think about filling your tables with a mix of candles, votives, and tealights at different heights to create a stunning centerpiece moment. If your venue has high ceilings, hanging lanterns adds this dreamy quality that looks incredible in photos.
And keep going from there! Add decorative string lights, lanterns along walkways, and thoughtful ambient lighting throughout the space to get that luxurious glow.
Here's a simple tip…lower the overhead lights just a tad to create an intimate atmosphere. That one small change makes such a big difference.
More style points to you if you bring in a lighting designer to layer different elements together…uplighting in soft pinks or warm ambers, candlelight at eye level, and a little sparkle overhead.
This kind of depth and dimension really brings the whole room to life.
First Impressions & Fizzy Finishes
Your wedding stationery sets the entire mood before guests even walk through the door. Think of it as the very first chapter of your wedding story.
One of the biggest stationery trends these days is uniquely shaped paper goods. Ovals, arches, scalloped edges, and abstract cuts are redefining what a wedding invitation can be. Turn them into a keepsake by using letterpress printing, or metallic foil.
Another fabulous option is personalized artwork, like watercolor paintings or hand-drawn sketches of your ceremony or reception venue. These custom artwork invitations give guests a piece of art to hold on to.
And when it comes to your reception, a wine and cheese pairing station is such an elegant addition to your cocktail hour. Set up a variety of whites, reds, rosé, and champagne alongside both soft and hard cheeses. Add little notes explaining why each pairing works so well together.
You could also work with a mixologist to craft signature cocktails. Each drink could represent a memory, like the city where you first met or a shared favorite flavor. Offer guests a choice between a "Bride's Choice" and a "Groom's Choice" cocktail for a playful twist.
Your guests will be snapping photos and talking about it long after the last toast.
Love at First Shot
Documentary-style photography is definitely in style. This approach captures real, unscripted moments. Laughter, stolen glances, and happy tears. All things that make for a enchanting wedding day. Every candid shot is real, helping you relive the day's emotions in their purest form.
Work with your photographer to brainstorm locations that are unique to you as a couple. Want to rent that hotel room with a view that brings back memories of your first trip together? I say do it!
Or how about photos at that quirky spot you both love? Couples are carving out time in their wedding timeline to visit a favorite coffee shop or local spot for photos that capture a peek into their daily lives.
And for a Valentine's Day wedding specifically, ask your photographer about incorporating moody, romantic lighting into your portraits. Think warm highlights, rich shadows, and deeper saturation that give your images a filmic quality. You’ll be so glad you did.
Warm Drinks, Warm Hearts
Depending on the weather, it might be a bit chilly outside. So opt for a hot drink bar!
But go above and beyond basic coffee and tea. I'm talking house-made hot chocolate with artisanal marshmallows, spiked cider stations, or espresso martini bars where guests can customize their drinks.
Consider a "love potion" station with rose-infused lattes or champagne hot chocolate. Yummy!
What makes this extra luxurious is the presentation and the quality of ingredients. Hire a barista and use beautiful glassware. Your guests will love having something warm and indulgent, especially if your ceremony or cocktail hour involves any time outdoors in February.
Rethink Your Color Story
When people hear "Valentine's Day wedding," they often picture red and pink everywhere. And while those colors can be stunning, I think the most memorable Valentine's weddings play with a wider range of colors.
Consider deep burgundy paired with champagne and hints of black for sophistication. Or try blush pink with terracotta and warm metallics for a more modern romantic look.
If red has never been your thing, you can absolutely build your wedding around other hues that speak to you. It’s your wedding after all!
The Little Extras That Impress
This is something I think really sets unforgettable weddings apart, and that’s designing experiential elements throughout your wedding.
Instead of a standard dessert table, consider a late-night sweets experience where a pastry chef creates something tableside. For your send-off, arrange for a vintage car departure or a sparkler tunnel choreographed to your favorite song.
A custom fragrance bar where guests blend their own "love potion" to take home. A live artist capturing couple portraits throughout the evening. You could even take a moment to honor the longest married couple in the room!
Cold Never Bothered Us Anyway
February weddings come with certain realities…shorter days, cooler temperatures, the possibility of weather surprises.
So use it all to your advantage. Plan your ceremony for late afternoon so you get that gorgeous golden hour light, then transition into an evening filled with candlelight and ambiance.
Use the cooler weather as an opportunity to provide faux fur wraps for your bridal party and guests.
And if your wedding is in a region where snow is possible, have a backup plan...and also get excited about the potential for incredible winter photos!
