Your wedding dress, the ceremony flowers, your bouquet. So many decisions, so much coordination!
But when you think about it, your guests are going to spend the majority of your wedding ceremony doing exactly one thing…sitting in a chair. That’s it! That’s their whole job.
And yet somehow, chairs are so often at the bottom of a bride's styling checklist, right after “decide on napkin folds.”
Your ceremony seating is one of the first design details your guests see up close (other than you and your grand entrance of course)!
I don’t think chairs need to be an afterthought! I’m sharing some more of my favorite wedding chair styles and decoration ideas. Feel free to be totally inspired.
Think Beyond the Altar
When it comes to your wedding ceremony, try to think about the full picture, not only the altar. When you line both sides of your ceremony aisle with matching Chiavari chairs draped in flowing white fabric, it all becomes part of the design.
You’re creating a breathtaking experience for each and every guest, their very own styled moment. It's a small detail per chair, but multiply it across every row on both sides, and now your entire ceremony has been transformed.
Talk to your florist or stylist about using chair dressing services so everything stays uniform from row one to the last.
Chair Styling Tip: Uniform chair draping down the full length of your aisle creates a magazine-worthy visual aesthetic that elevates your entire ceremony, not only the altar.
Sometimes the Answer Is Just… More Yellow
How about some vibrant color? I say absolutely!
Your chair sashes and your wedding colors are working together whether you plan for it or not, so you might as well be strategic about it. These white Chiavari chairs draped in long, flowing yellow sashes tied into soft bows are a perfect example of how one simple fabric choice can completely enhance a ceremony setup.
The sashes pool slightly at the base of each chair, which gives the whole aisle a dreamy ambiance. Bright, sunny yellow against white chairs is a nice pairing for an outdoor ceremony, especially when you have lush green trees framing the background.
If you’re open to incorporating color into your ceremony, a long sash in a statement shade might be exactly the move for your wedding chairs.
Chair Styling Tip: When using a bold sash color, let the fabric run long and pool at the bottom. Keep everything else on the chair clean so the sash stays the star.
The Little Bouquet That Does a Lot
We all know that your bouquet will be the star. But what about a mini bouquet for your aisle chairs? Take a small floral bundle and secure it to the back of an aisle chair (usually the end seats on each row).
The trick is in the composition. You’ll want a mix of flowers, filler, and greenery so the bundle is full enough. Talk to your florist about creating coordinating aisle bundles using stems from your overall florals, or even to craft miniatures of your own bridal bouquet. This styling choice also photographs incredibly well because it gives your photographer something gorgeous to work with at every row.
Chair Styling Tip: A small floral bundle tied with twine or ribbon to the back of each aisle chair. Ask your florist to use leftover stems from your arrangements so nothing goes to waste.
The Sweeping Sash
Yes, more sashes! If you haven’t spent time thinking about your chair sashes yet, then take this as your nudge to start.
Peach fabric drapes over the top of each white Chiavari chair and sweeps all the way down toward the grass, pooling right at the edge of the aisle where you'll be making your grand entrance. The white hydrangea bloom gathered at the cinch point is the perfect finishing touch.
Please take note of your fabric choice! Organza, chiffon, and tulle all drape very differently, so it’s worth asking your stylist or rental company to show you swatches in person before you commit.
Chair Styling Tip: For maximum aisle impact, focus your sash styling on the end chairs so the fabric naturally sweeps toward the aisle path. Ask to see fabric swatches in person.
Simple, Breezy, and Totally Dreamy
I know, I know…these simple white ladder-back chairs are completely bare. But hear me out, because I love it.
When your venue already looks like this, the smartest thing you can do is get out of the way and let it shine. Those grand white pillars, the open sky, the natural light pouring in. Adding a bunch of chair decor here would actually take away from what makes this setup so lovely in the first place.
The plain white chairs blend right into the architecture. I’d say this is a great reminder that sometimes the smartest styling decision is knowing where NOT to put the decor.
Chair Styling Tip: If your venue already has strong architectural features or a natural backdrop, resist the urge to over-decorate your chairs. Simple, clean seating will complement the scenery far better than competing with it.
Lace for a Pretty and Rustic Chair
Are you a fan of lace? Then this might be for you!
For a rustic vibe, go with your lace-wrapped wooden chairs with loose, garden style flowers. The combination of materials is what makes it so pretty. Lace brings softness, wood brings structure, and the loose flowers bring a sense of natural movement that ties it all together.
If you’re getting married in a barn, vineyard, estate, or any venue with natural architectural character, this kind of chair styling is going to complement your venue. Work with your rental company to source wooden chairs with the right finish, whether they’re whitewashed, natural, or dark stained. Then let your florist craft the chair decor from there to match your overall design direction.
Chair Styling Tip: When combining materials like lace, wood, and loose flowers, make sure each element has a distinct visual role.
Dressed for the Occasion
I think of this chair styling the way I’d think of a wedding guest who really dressed for the occasion. The natural wood chair is already fabulous on its own. But the chiffon sashes and cascading pearl strands are the statement jewelry that takes the whole thing from lovely to looks like it belongs in a fashion magazine.
This would be a great fit if your wedding aesthetic leans vintage or old-money elegant.
Chair Styling Tip: Treat your chairs like an outfit. Start with a base fabric in your color palette, then add in accessories like pearl strands.
